We have lobbied within the USA for quite a few years about the ineffectiveness of the chest clip / buckle, the associated risks in the event of a collision, as well as cases of asphyxiation by misadventure. If you are resident in the USA and have concerns on the effectiveness or safety of your chest clip on your child car seat it is worth contacting both the CPSC and NHTSA to share your concerns.
Why are American car seat brands continuing with the use of the chest clip? We don’t know the full answer but the following might help build a picture… An employee of a US supplier of chest clips stated that brands find it difficult to change their design due to fear of litigation as this suggests or confirms that the old design was flawed. A VP of R&D for one American car seat manufacturer stated “they would not exist tomorrow if they changed their design” due to fear of litigation from past fatalities and injuries. Another US child car seat brand removed two VPs after they wished to implement the award winning 5 Point Plus Anti-Escape System.
